Flamengo Win Copa Libertadores After Record-Setting Run Through Knockout Phase
Flamengo beat Athletico Paranaense 1-0 in an all-Brazilian final to win the 2022 Copa Libertadores in Ecuador on Saturday night.
Former Inter Milan forward Gabriel Barbosa scored the game's only goal in first-half added time at the Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo.
Gabriel's goal came moments after Athletico defender Pedro Henrique had been sent off for two yellow card offenses.
The result saw Flamengo become the first Copa Libertadores champions to win every game during the knockout phase.
Flamengo beat Colombia's Deportes Tolima 1-0 and 7-1 in the round of 16 before seeing off Corinthians 2-0 and 1-0 in the quarter-finals.
A 6-1 aggregate victory over Argentina's Velez Sarsfield followed in the semi-finals.
Flamengo forward Pedro ended the tournament with the Golden Boot after scoring 12 goals, including a semi-final hat-trick.
The only game Flamengo did not win in this year's tournament was a 2-2 draw with Talleres in Argentina during the group stage.
Flamengo ended the 2022 Copa Libertadores with a record of 12 wins, one draw and no defeats.
They scored 33 goals and conceded just eight.
