Frank Lampard Confirmed As Chelsea Caretaker Manager As Todd Boehly Hails Return Of Club "Legend"
Frank Lampard has been confirmed as Chelsea's caretaker manager until the end of the season.
Lampard scored a record-breaking 211 goals in 648 games as a Chelsea player, before returning to manage the club for 84 matches between July 2019 an January 2021.
The 44-year-old was sacked by former owner Roman Abramovich but he has been brought back to the club, albeit on a short-term basis, by new owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.
Boehly and Eghbali said in a joint statement on Thursday: "We are delighted to welcome Frank back to Stamford Bridge.
"Frank is a Premier League Hall of Famer and a legend at this club. As we continue our thorough and exhaustive process for a permanent head coach, we want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season.
"We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line.
"We have an important game against Wolves on Saturday and then we will turn our attention to our Champions League quarter-final in Madrid next week.
"We are all going to give Frank our full backing as we aim to get the best possible outcome from all our remaining games."
Lampard, who had been out of work since being fired by Everton in January, spoke at a press conference shortly after his re-appointment by Chelsea had been confirmed.
He told reporters: "This is my club. I have a lot of emotions towards the club. I'm also a practical person.
"I've been on a different path since I left Chelsea, but to come back at a time when the club have asked me, with a belief I can help until the end of the season, I'm delighted to have this opportunity.
"I'm confident in myself. I've worked with a lot of the players before. I understand what the Chelsea fans want and I will do my utmost to give them what they want."
Lampard was asked if he could provide details of what his backroom staff would look like for the remainder of the season, but he was unable to do so.
It is unclear whether Bruno Saltor will remain at the club.
Bruno was brought to Chelsea as an assistant coach by former manager Graham Potter in September.
The Spaniard took charge of Chelsea's 0-0 draw against Liverpool on Tuesday, after Potter had been fired on Sunday.
Lampard watched that game from the stands.
