Gabriel Jesus is expected to miss Arsenal's first three matches of the season at the very least after the Brazilian striker underwent knee surgery on Wednesday.

Jesus missed 15 Gunners games last season after injuring his right knee while playing for Brazil at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

He recovered in time to feature in Arsenal's final 13 fixtures of the 2022/23 campaign, scoring six goals during that period.

Jesus appeared to have been over his knee problem as he played in Arsenal's first four pre-season friendlies this summer.

But he was left out by Mikel Arteta for Wednesday's clash with Monaco in the Emirates Cup, which the Gunners won 5-4 on penalties after Eddie Nketiah scored from open play in a 1-1 draw.

Arsenal tweeted shortly after the lineups were published: "Gabby Jesus misses tonight's game due to a knee issue and will be assessed."

A further update was issued by manager Arteta after the match.

Arteta told reporters at the Emirates Stadium: "Unfortunately, he has had a little procedure this morning.

"He had some discomfort in his knee that has been causing some issues and they had to go in and resolve it.

"It's not something major, but he's going to be out for a few weeks I think."

Jesus will definitely miss next weekend's Community Shield game against Manchester City at Wembley, as well as Arsenal's first two EPL fixtures - at home to Nottingham Forest and then away at Crystal Palace.
