Gary O'Neil has been appointed as the new manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The former Bournemouth boss signed a three-year contract with Wolves on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the club had parted company with Julen Lopetegui.

O'Neil's first game in his new job will be away at Manchester United next Monday.

Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs said in a statement: "We're delighted to welcome Gary to the club.

"He's a highly motivated young coach with strong principles and very well thought of by everyone he has worked with, and we're excited to see what we can achieve together at Wolves.

"Our players have shown their quality during pre-season, and I believe Gary and his team will continue to coach and improve them and will have success working with this group.

"Everyone at Wolves is looking forward to welcoming Gary, offering him their full support and working collaboratively to help the club to keep pushing forward together."

O'Neil, who celebrated his 40th birthday in May, has become the youngest Wolves manager this century.

He has one season of experience managing in the Premier League, having taken the reigns at Bournemouth at the end of August 2022 - three days after the team had been thrashed 9-0 by Liverpool under previous manager Scott Parker.

O'Neil led Bournemouth to a 15th-place finish last season after winning 10 of 34 EPL games.

But the Cherries terminated O'Neil's contract in June, before replacing him with Andoni Iraola.
