Harry Kane is the outright top scorer in the history of the England national team.

Kane moved clear of Wayne Rooney on Thursday night by converting a first-half penalty kick in England's Euro 2024 qualifier away to Italy.

The penalty was awarded after Giovanni Di Lorenzo handled the ball inside the 18-yard box under pressure from Kane.

Kane had missed his last spot-kick for England in a World Cup quarter-final against France in December.

But he made no mistake in Naples as he sent keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way to score the 54th goal of his international career.

England's no.9 was overcome with joy as he celebrated at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, where the stadium announcer acknowledged a "historic goal for England by Harry Kane" over the public address system.

Kane's goal put England 2-0 up in Thursday's game after Declan Rice had netted a 13th-minute opener.

England went on to win 2-1.

Kane is also Tottenham's all-time leading scorer, having broken that record in February.
