Harry Maguire "Extremely Disappointed" After Being Dropped As Manchester United Captain
Manchester United confirmed on Sunday that Harry Maguire will not serve as club captain next season.
He was appointed as United's skipper by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January 2020 - five months after the England defender moved to Old Trafford in an £80 million move from Leicester City.
But Maguire, 30, has started just eight Premier League games since Erik ten Hag took charge at United last summer.
Maguire issued a statement via ManUtd.com on Sunday, expressing his disappointment at being stood down as captain but he also vowed to "continue to give my all" in any future appearances for the club.
"After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain," said Maguire.
"He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I'm personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.
"So I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I've been wearing the armband.
"Since the day I took on the role, three-and-a-half years ago, it's been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date.
"It's one of the greatest honours in club football. I've done everything I possibly could to help United be successful - on and off the field.
"I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for first giving me the responsibility and I wish whoever now takes it on every success and they will have my full support."
United have said that Maguire's replacement will be announced "in due course".
Maguire is under contract with United until June 2025.
West Ham and Tottenham are both said to be interested in signing the player this summer.
However, Maguire would likely have to reduce his salary - or agree a compensation package with United - in order to facilitate a move away from Old Trafford.
