Harry Maguire's Mother Calls Abuse Aimed At England And Manchester United Defender "Disgraceful"
The mother of Harry Maguire has said that the abuse aimed at the Manchester United and England center-back has been "disgraceful and totally unacceptable".
Maguire, 30, was removed as United captain in July after losing his place as a regular starter under manager Erik ten Hag.
His only club appearance so far this season came as a substitute in a 3-1 loss at Arsenal, where he was sarcastically cheered by home fans.
Despite his lack of game time for United, Maguire featured for England in Tuesday's 3-1 win over Scotland in Glasgow.
After scoring an own goal, he was widely mocked on social media and criticized by sections of the press.
Maguire - who moved to Old Trafford from Leicester City for a transfer fee of £80 million in 2019 - has also been booed by some England and United fans over the past two years.
Mum Zoe wrote in a statement published via Instagram on Thursday: "As a mum seeing the level of negative and abusive comments which my son is receiving from some fans, pundits and the media is disgraceful and totally unacceptable to any walk of life, never mind someone who works his socks off for club and country.
"I was there in the stand as usual, it's not acceptable what's been created, over nothing.
"I understand that in the football world there are ups and downs, positives and negatives but what Harry receives has gone far beyond 'football'.
"For me seeing him go through what he's going through is not ok.
"I would hate to have to see any other parents or players go through this in the future, especially the young boys and girls breaking through the ranks today.
"Harry has a massive heart and it's a good job he's mentally strong and can handle it, as others might not be able to. I wish this sort of abuse on nobody!"
