Lina Hurtig scored the penalty kick that sealed Sweden's shootout victory over the USWNT in their round of 16 game at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

American keeper Alyssa Naeher - who had scored herself earlier in the shootout - got two hands to Hurtig's shot but the ball continued moving towards the goal.

Naeher then touched the ball again by clawing it away from her goal-line.

By this point Hurtig was frantically waving her arms. She thought - or at least she hoped - that the ball had crossed the line before Naeher's second touch.

Meanwhile, Naeher was seen waving her finger at the assistant referee. But it was too close for the official to make a definitive judgement, so a VAR review was called.

Around 20 seconds later, on-field referee Stephanie Frappart was informed by the VAR that the ball had indeed crossed the line and Sweden were given their cue to celebrate a famous win.

But how far over the line was the penalty kick that ended the USA's dreams of a third consecutive Women's World Cup title?

Images provided by FIFA have shown that Hurtig's penalty crossed the line by a matter of millimeters, rather than centimeters.
