Meet Inter Miami's New Manager Gerardo 'Tata' Martino Who Has Already Coached Lionel Messi... And Won The MLS Cup
Gerardo 'Tata' Martino has been appointed as the new Inter Miami manager.
Miami had been without a permanent boss since firing Phil Neville on June 1.
Meanwhile, Martino had been out of work since leaving his role with the Mexico national team following last year's FIFA World Cup.
"Tata is a highly respected figure in our sport whose track record speaks for itself," said co-owner David Beckham.
"We are confident that his achievements in the game and experience as a head coach will inspire our team and excite our fans and look forward to seeing the impact he will have on and off the field."
Martino, 60, has managed in Major League Soccer before, having spent more than two years at Atlanta United between September 2016 and December 2018.
He took charge of 74 games with Atlanta in all competitions, winning 40 (54.05%), drawing 12 and losing 12.
Martino's final game in charge of Atlanta saw his team beat Portland Timbers 2-0 to win the 2018 MLS Cup.
As well as being familiar with MLS, Martino already has a relationship with Inter Miami's new poster boy, Lionel Messi.
Messi played under Martino at international level from August 2014 to July 2016. Argentina twice finished second in the Copa America during that period.
Martino had previously been Messi's manager at club level too, at Barcelona in the 2013/14 campaign.
Barca finished second in La Liga that season, while Messi scored 41 goals in all competitions.
Martino, who won one senior Argentina cap during his playing career, has also managed the likes of Newell's Old Boys, Paraguay and Club Libertad.
