Thomas Tuchel has urged Joao Cancelo to control his emotions when Bayern Munich take on Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Cancelo is still officially a City player but he joined Bayern on loan in January and could make that move permanent in the summer.

Despite being under contract with City, Cancelo is eligible to play against his parent club for Bayern.

Bayern manager Tuchel told reporters ahead of Tuesday's first leg at the Etihad Stadium: "I hope he can manage his emotions and he's not over motivated or over excited, but on the other hand not too friendly or too shy."

Cancelo moved to Bayern after spending three and a half years working under City manager Pep Guardiola.

Tuchel acknowledged that Cancelo is likely to have a good understanding of Guardiola's tactical plans, but he played down the importance of this insider knowledge.

"I know he's looking forward to it, he knows the system very well but I would say that I also know the system very well," Tuchel added.

"But it's not enough to know it. A lot of people know that smoking is not healthy and still they smoke so it's about what we do, it's not about what we know."

Cancelo has made 12 appearances for Bayern in all competitions since his arrival from City at the end of January. Bayern have won nine of those games and lost three.
