Jonny Evans Rejoins Manchester United After Signing Short-Term Deal Until START Of New Season
Manchester United have re-signed Jonny Evans on a short-term deal eight years after he left the club.
The Northern Ireland center-back departed Old Trafford after more than a decade with United in 2015 when he joined West Bromwich Albion.
Evans - who won 11 trophies with United in his first spell, including three Premier League titles - then moved to Leicester City in 2018.
But he became a free agent this summer after leaving Leicester following the club's relegation to the EFL Championship.
A United club statement published on Tuesday read: "Experienced defender Jonny Evans has signed a short-term deal to enable him to take part in Manchester United's upcoming pre-season games in Edinburgh and San Diego.
"The Academy graduate had been training with the Under-21s whilst considering his options, following his departure from Leicester City at the end of last season.
"As part of the Academy training programme, he has also taken part in a number of first-team sessions and impressed Erik ten Hag and the coaching staff."
Evans has only signed a contract with United until the start of the new season, meaning he may only feature in friendly matches before being released.
However, there is a chance that United could choose to extend the 35-year-old's deal until June 2024, especially if Harry Maguire exits Old Trafford this summer.
Maguire was recently removed from his role as United captain but the England defender is still under contract for another two years.
West Ham, Tottenham and Chelsea are all said to be interested in signing Maguire.
However, Maguire would likely have to reduce his salary - or agree a compensation package with United - in order to facilitate a move away from Old Trafford.
