Juventus Back Out Of European Super League Project
A club statement has announced that Juventus intend to pull out of the European Super League project.
Twelve clubs, including Juventus, agreed to form a breakaway tournament back in 2021.
The Super League was set to be governed by its founding clubs - Juve, AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur.
However, following a strong backlash from fans and amid threats of legal action and sporting punishments from UEFA, nine of those clubs swiftly backed out.
Juve, Real and Barca had remained on board with the idea of forming a breakaway competition.
But following talks with the two Spanish clubs, Juve issued a press release on Thursday.
It read: "Reference is made to our previous communication dated 6 June 2023, pursuant to which Juventus announced the commencement of a period of discussions with Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, clubs not having hitherto announced their intention to exit the Super League project, in respect of Juventus' proposed decision to exit from said project.
"Following such discussions, and given the existing discrepancies on the interpretation of the relevant contractual terms applicable to the Super League Project, Juventus confirms that it has initiated the procedure to exit therefrom, but it also acknowledges that, under the applicable contractual terms, its exit will be completed and effective only if previously authorized by Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and the remaining clubs involved in the Super League Project."
Juve finished fourth in Italy's Serie A last season but were demoted to seventh place after being hit with a 10-point penalty for financial rule breaches.
As a result, Juve will play in the UEFA Europa Conference League next season, rather than the Champions League.
