Kylian Mbappe has been officially named as the new captain of the French men's national team.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward succeeds goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who retired from international soccer following the World Cup in Qatar.

It was France coachย Didier Deschamps who decided that Mbappe was the man to replace Lloris.

A short statement from the France Football Association confirmed on Tuesday:ย "Didier Deschamps has named Kylian Mbappe the new captain of Les Bleus."

Mbappe was France's MVP at Qatar 2022.

He won the World Cup's Golden Boot after scoring eight goals in seven games, including a hat-trick in the final, which France lost to Argentina in a penalty shootout after an epic 3-3 draw.

Mbappe is only 24 years old but he has already played 66 times for his country at senior international level.

Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann has 117 caps and had been seen as a strong candidate to replace Lloris as France skipper.

Butย Griezmann has instead been appointed as vice-captain, behind Mbappe.

Mbappe's first games as France captain will be against Holland on Friday and Ireland on Monday in Euro 2024 qualifiers.
