Lauren James Apologizes To Michelle Alozie And England Fans For Her Violent Conduct And Red Card Against Nigeria

England forward Lauren James has issued an apology following her red card during Monday's last 16 clash with Nigeria at the Women's World Cup.

James was sent off for violent conduct in the 87th minute of the game after appearing to deliberately stamp on the backside of Nigeria's Michelle Alozie.

England still managed to progress without James, beating Nigeria 4-2 in a penalty shootout after holding on for a 0-0 draw after extra time.

James will now be suspended when the Lionesses take on Colombia in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

"All my love and respect to you. I am sorry for what happened," James wrote on social media in a message aimed at Alozie.

She added: "Also, for our England fans and my team-mates, playing with and for you is my greatest honour and I promise to learn from my experience."

James was responding directly to an earlier message posted by Alozie in which the Nigeria star appeared to offer her forgiveness.

Alozie - who plays her club soccer for the Houston Dash - had written: "Abeg, rest. We are playing on the world's stage. This game is one of passion, insurmountable emotions, and moments. All respect for Lauren James."
