Lionel Messi surprised shoppers at a Publix supermarket in Miami on Thursday.

The 36-year-old soccer icon recently touched down in the United States following a summer break after leaving Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season.

After agreeing to sign for Inter Miami, Messi is set to become the highest-profile player ever to feature in Major League Soccer.

But he looked almost like an average Joe as he pushed a shopping cart up and down the aisles while dressed in a tee-shirt and shorts, with nothing but a pair of sliders on his feet.

Despite Messi's best attempts to blend in, he was recognized by several fans and he posed for multiple selfies before making his way to the checkout.

Messi was accompanied on his shopping trip by wife Antonela Roccuzzo and their three sons.

The commercial team at Messi's new club will likely be delighted by their star player's choice of supermarket.

That is because Publix is the official supermarket partner of Inter Miami.

Messi said he was hoping for "more calm" when he announced his decision to swap European soccer for MLS.
