Tottenham Hotspur confirmed on Friday that Sweden midfielder Lucas Bergvall will join the club from Djurgarden on July 1.

Bergvall - who was celebrating his 18th birthday on Friday - will then be under contract with Spurs until June 2029.

Spurs will pay Djurgarden a transfer fee approaching £8.5 million, according to BBC Sport.

Bergvall made his senior international debut in January and is widely considered to be one of the most talented players in his age group.

He has been scouted by several of Europe's top clubs, while The Athletic reported that he rejected a move to Barcelona before saying yes to Spurs.

Although he will not officially join Spurs until the summer, Bergvall met some of his new teammates in London this week.

He was also seen chatting with manager Ange Postecoglou while he underwent his medical exam.

A statement issued by Spurs on Friday read: "We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement for Lucas Bergvall to join the Club from Swedish Allsvenskan side Djurgarden.

"The midfielder has agreed a deal that will run until 2029 and he will join us on 1 July.

"Turning 18 today (Friday 2 February), Lucas has achieved a great deal in his short career so far. He was only 16 when he first played for IF Brommapojkarna (BP) in the Superettan, the second tier of Swedish football, and featured 11 times as BP gained promotion to the Allsvenskan in 2022.

"His performances caught the eye of clubs across Europe and Lucas opted to stay in Stockholm and join his brother, Theo, at Djurgarden. Lucas progressed again last season, making 25 appearances (out of 30) as his side finished fourth in the Allsvenskan. He played 29 times in all competitions, scoring three goals, taking his tally of senior appearances in Sweden to 42.

"On the international stage, Lucas is a senior Sweden international, making his debut in January against Estonia. He has also represented his country at Under-21, Under-19 and Under-17 levels."

Bergvall is set to become the third Swedish footballer to play for Tottenham in the Premier League - following in the footsteps of former left-back Erik Edman and current winger Dejan Kulusevski.
