The two most successful clubs in EFL Cup history will meet in the last 16 in December.

Thursday night's EFL Cup draw saw Manchester City handed a home clash with Liverpool.

Eight-time champions City have won the tournament in six of the last nine years, but Liverpool are the holders after lifting the trophy for a record-breaking ninth time last season.

No other club has won more than five EFL Cups.

With half of the Premier League's clubs having already been knocked out, there will only be one other all-EPL game in the round of 16. That will be between Newcastle and Bournemouth.

Elsewhere, Manchester United will host Burnley, Wolves will welcome Gillingham and Nottingham Forest will visit Blackburn.

Leicester and Brighton have both been drawn to play away at League One clubs - MK Dons and Charlton respectively.

The timing of these matches will be interesting.

Round of 16 games are scheduled to take place in the week commencing December 19.

The majority are expected to be held on December 20 and December 21, just days after the FIFA World Cup final on December 18.
