Mason Greenwood To Stay In Police Custody After Being Denied Bail
Mason Greenwood was denied bail at Salford magistrates court on Monday.
The Manchester United footballer had been charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault two days earlier.
The Crown Prosecution Service decided to charge Greenwood after arresting him for breaching a previous bail agreement.
Greenwood was originally arrested in January on suspicion of rape, sexual assault, making threats to kill, and assault.
His arrest came as police officers responded to seeing an 18-year-old woman reporting claims of violence and sexual threats on social media.
Greenwood was released on bail in early February. One of the conditions of his bail was that he must not attempt to make contact with his accuser.
He was re-arrested on Saturday on suspicion of breaching that condition.
Members of Greenwood's family were in court on Monday.
Greenwood spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, and address.
The 21-year-old is now due to appear at Manchester Minshull Street crown court on November 21.
He will remain in custody until then unless a new application for bail is successful.
All charges against Greenwood relate to the same woman.
The attempted rape is alleged to have happened in October 2021, while the assault is said to have taken place in December 2021.
The allegation of controlling and coercive behavior relates to Greenwood's conduct towards the woman between November 2018 and October 2022.
Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United shortly after his arrest in January.
He has not played for the club or trained with his teammates since then.
