Mo Salah has been ruled out for the rest of January with the hamstring injury that forced him off during Egypt's 2-2 draw with Ghana.

The Liverpool forward pulled up after attempting to run and was pictured holding his left hamstring before walking off the field.

Egypt coach Rui Vitoria told reporters after the game: "Of course, we are worried and we hope it is not too serious."

Twenty-four hours later, the Egyptian Football Association issued an update.

It read: "Tests on Mohamed Salah, the captain of the Egypt national team, proved that he suffered a hamstring injury and will miss the next two matches of the team at the AFCON."

Salah will therefore only play again at this year's Africa Cup of Nations if his Egypt teammates reach the quarter-finals.

After drawing their first two group games, Egypt must beat Cape Verde on Monday to be sure of a spot in the last 16.

The round of 16 will take place between January 27 and 30. The quarter-finals will then begin on February 2.

Salah is just two games shy of winning his 100th cap for Egypt.

He has scored 56 times in his first 98 international appearances. Only retired striker Hossam Hassan has scored more goals, 68, for the North African country.
