Newcastle Edge Ahead Of Sunderland In Head To Head After First Derby Win Since 2011
Alexander Isak scored two goals as Newcastle United beat local rivals Sunderland for the first time since August 2011 to reach round four of the FA Cup.
An own goal by Daniel Ballard put Newcastle in front in the 35th minute at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
Isak then punished a Pierre Ekwah error to double Newcastle's lead early in the second half before converting a 90th-minute penalty to wrap up a 3-0 victory.
This was the first meeting between Newcastle and Sunderland since 2016.
Sunderland had been unbeaten in nine Tyne-Wear derbies before Saturday.
The previous 28 Tyne-Wear derbies had all taken place in the Premier League, while Saturday's game was the first FA Cup clash between the two North-East rivals since 1956.
Newcastle now hold a narrow lead over Sunderland in terms of their all-time head-to-head record.
After 157 games, Newcastle have won 54 times, lost 53 and there have been 50 draws.
