Olga Carmona was informed after Sunday's FIFA Women's World Cup final that her father had died.

The Spain captain's dad had been fighting a long-term illness and passed away on Friday.

Carmona's family decided not to tell her until after the final so that she could focus on leading her country to global glory.

She did just that. The Real Madrid left-back scored a brilliant goal in the 29th minute of Spain's 1-0 win over England.

After the game, an emotional Carmona tweeted a photo of herself kissing her gold medal. Alongside the image, she wrote: "And without knowing it, I had my star before the game started.

"I know that you have given me the strength to achieve something unique. I know that you have been watching me tonight and that you are proud of me. Rest in peace dad".

The star that Carmona was referring to is the gold star that will now be added to the jersey of the Spain women's national team to celebrate their status as world champions.

The Spanish Football Association also published a statement. It read: "The RFEF deeply regrets to announce the death of Olga Carmona's father.

"The footballer learned the sad news after the World Cup final.

"We send our most sincere embrace to Olga and her family in a moment of deep sorrow. We love you, Olga, you are Spanish soccer history."
