Pape Matar Sarr Scores In Spurs Win Over Bournemouth But Injury Blow Could See Senegal Star Miss AFCON
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr walked off the field in tears 32 minutes into his team's 3-1 win over Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday.
Sarr had earlier fired Spurs 1-0 up with a fine low strike from 18 yards - the second goal of his EPL career.
But he was then forced out of the game with a hamstring injury that could also see him miss the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
Sarr looked heartbroken as he left the pitch with his shirt covering his face.
He was consoled by Spurs captain Son Heung-min, before receiving a sympathetic pat on the back from manager Ange Postecoglou.
Sunday's game was supposed to be Sarr's final club appearance before joining up with his Senegal teammates for AFCON 2023 - which is actually being played in 2024 between January 13 and February 11.
The 21-year-old had been named alongside Sadio Mane in Senegal's 27-man squad earlier in the week.
Sarr has been capped 18 times at senior international level since making his Senegal debut in 2021.
Bournemouth caused Spurs plenty of problems on Sunday but the home side went 2-0 up on 71 minutes when Son netted his 12th club goal of the season.
Richarlison then added a third for Spurs before Alex Scott bagged a consolation goal for the Cherries.
After making all five of their substitutions, Spurs ended the game with just 10 players after Alejo Veliz went off with an injury late on.
Like Sarr, Veliz left the field in tears.
Tottenham are now just one point below local rivals Arsenal in the EPL table.
The Gunners lost 2-1 at Fulham on Sunday.
