Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico was discharged from hospital on Friday.

The 29-year-old had been a patient at the Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Seville for the past 82 days.

He was rushed there on May 28 after suffering severe head injuries when he was hit by a runaway horse and mule cart during a pilgrimage in El Rocio.

Rico was in intensive care for the first 38 days of his hospital stay and he underwent multiple operations.

But he was able to walk out of hospital on Friday, alongside his wife Alba Silva, before speaking to the media gathered outside.

"Good afternoon everyone," said Rico. "I feel quite well. It is necessary to maintain a few months of peace and quiet, to continue to be at home.

"I wanted to say a few words to thank my family and my wife for their respect. I wanted to thank the football world that has sent me messages of support.

"Everyone who has stopped for a minute to give me support, I thank them. Also, of course, to the Hospital Virgen del Rocio, who are professionals of the highest order."

Starting to cry, Rico added: "I feel very emotional. Thanks above all to my wife, who has spent almost 20 hours a day with me."

He also said that he had been grateful for the support shown to him by fans of Sevilla FC during his time in hospital.

Rico was born in Seville and spent 14 years at his local club before moving to PSG in 2020.
