Roy Keane has urged Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to remove Bruno Fernandes from his role as club captain.

Fernandes, 29, replaced Harry Maguire as United captain in July, after the England defender had lost his place in Ten Hag's first-choice XI.

But Keane - who famously skippered United during the club's treble-winning campaign of 1998/99 - does not believe that Fernandes is "captain material".

Speaking on Sky Sports after watching United lose 3-0 at home to Manchester City on Sunday, Keane criticized Fernandes for his negative body language.

Keane added: "The first thing I would do is take the captaincy off him. I know it's a big decision but Fernandes is not captain material.

"He's a talented player, but what I saw today - he's whingeing, he's moaning, he's throwing his arms up in the air constantly - it really isn't acceptable.

"When you're talking about where do they make changes - board level, managers - I'd start with that because the manager is capable of doing that.

"Fernandes is a brilliant footballer but he's the opposite to what you want in a captain."

Sunday's defeat left United eighth in the Premier League table with just 15 points from the first 10 rounds of fixtures this season.
