Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali will not play again this season after being hit with a 10-month ban from football for breaching betting rules.

Tonali's ban was announced by the Italian Football Federation on Thursday.

Newcastle signed Tonali from AC Milan for a transfer fee in the region of £55 million in July.

The 23-year-old Italian midfielder has so far featured in 12 matches for the Magpies, with his most recent appearance coming in a 1-0 home defeat by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Tonali will still be allowed to train with Newcastle during his suspension.

His ban came after he was charged with breaking Italian gambling regulations during his time with Milan.

Some of the bets placed by Tonali - who claims that he is a gambling addict - were on games in which he played.

However, it is understood that he never bet on his own team to lose.

Tonali's ban will expire in late August next year. He will not feature for Italy at Euro 2024.
