Scotland "Absolutely Capable" Of Reaching Knockout Rounds At Euro 2024
Michael Stewart believes that Scotland are "absolutely capable" of progressing beyond the group phase at Euro 2024 next year.
Scotland's qualification for the tournament in Germany was confirmed on Sunday night by Spain beating Norway 1-0 in Oslo.
That result left Spain and Scotland each with 15 points from six games in a qualifying group that also includes Georgia and Cyprus, as well as Erling Haaland's Norway.
Scotland have two qualifiers still to play - away to Georgia and at home to Norway - but are already guaranteed a place at the party, as are Spain.
Euro 2024 will be the 12th men's European Championship or World Cup to feature a Scottish entrant.
Scotland have yet to progress beyond the group stage in any of their previous 11 major tournament campaigns.
But Stewart is confident that Steve Clarke's team have what it takes to make history in Germany.
Former midfielder Stewart - who represented Scotland four times at senior international level from 2002 to 2008 - was working as a pundit for Viaplay on Sunday's game between Norway and Spain.
Speaking after the game, he said: "Unbelievable. To qualify automatically with two games to spare is some achievement.
"We're sitting level with Spain, only behind them on goal difference. That speaks volumes.
"It's all down to the huge effort and the quality that has been shown by this Scotland side.
"We qualify not because of the result this evening, but because of the work and the effort of the coaching staff and the manager for the last few months.
"Thoroughly deserved. We look forward to the Euros and look to the next challenge - getting out of the groups. They are absolutely capable of that."
