Son Heung-Min Confirmed As New Tottenham Club Captain Following Harry Kane's Exit
Son Heung-min was officially confirmed as the new club captain of Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon.
Spurs issued a statement to announce Son's appointment around seven hours after England captain Harry Kane had completed his transfer to Bayern Munich.
James Maddison and Cristian Romero were both named as vice-captains.
Kane never was Tottenham's club captain but it was widely understood that he would have been given the role had he stayed this summer.
Hugo Lloris had been Spurs skipper since August 2015 but the French goalkeeper is expected to leave the club in the coming weeks.
Son - who is also the captain of South Korea - said in an official Spurs statement: "It's such a big honor to captain this huge club.
"It was a big surprise and a very proud moment. I've already said to the players that everyone should feel like a captain, on and off the pitch.
"It's a new season, a fresh start and I will give everything for this shirt and this armband."
Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou added: "Sonny has great leadership qualities, both on and off the pitch, and is the ideal choice to become our new captain.
"Everyone knows he is a world class player, and he has enormous respect from everyone in the dressing room.
"He transcends groups within the squad. That's not just because he's popular - it's because of what he has achieved in the game, both here and as captain of South Korea."
