Ted Lasso Producers Criticized By Chelsea Fans After Banner In Honor Of Late Ray Wilkins Is Edited To Celebrate Fictional Footballer Roy Kent
The producers of hit TV show Ted Lasso have been criticized by the Chelsea Supporters' Trust.
This comes after episode 2 of season 3 used footage from Stamford Bridge showing an edited version of a banner that had been originally created in honor of the late Ray Wilkins.
The episode focuses on fictional footballer Roy Kent, a former Chelsea legend who is emotional and pensive about returning to his old stadium with AFC Richmond.
In the episode, Chelsea's fans show their love for Kent by displaying a banner that reads: "They don't make them like Roy anymore".
As the banner appears on screen, a commentator is heard saying: "That's a lovely moment. Chelsea fans letting their former captain Roy Kent know how they still feel about him."
The real banner - which reads: "They don't make them like Ray anymore" - first appeared at Stamford Bridge in 2018 after former midfielder Wilkins died aged 61 following a cardiac arrest.
Wilkins played more than 200 times for Chelsea between 1973 and 1979, before serving as a coach under Luiz Felipe Scolari, Guus Hiddink and Carlo Ancelotti.
The Chelsea Supporters' Trust said in a statement this week: "This is a banner paid for by supporters to commemorate a Chelsea legend: Ray Wilkins.
"Many supporters have seen this edit to be disrespectful, and we have expressed our disappointment to club officials. We expect that CFC will address this in due course."
One Chelsea fan wrote on Twitter: "NOW THIS is disgusting. Incredibly disrespectful to edit a banner of the late Ray Wilkins.
"Hugely concerning and embarrassing to think that Chelsea would have sanctioned this."
