Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois has been voted the world's best goalkeeper.

The 30-year-old received the Yashin Trophy at Monday's 2022 Ballon d'Or awards ceremony.

Courtois topped the vote ahead of Liverpool's Alisson Becker and Manchester City stopper Ederson.

Edouard Mendy, Mike Maignan, Kevin Trapp, Manuel Neuer, Jan Oblak, Yassine Bounou and Hugo Lloris completed the top 10.

It was no surprise to see Courtois claim the award after his stunning 2021/22 season had ended with an MVP performance in the Champions League final against Liverpool.

Real teammate Karim Benzema won the men's main Ballon d'Or award as Courtois came seventh.

Former Real keeper Iker Casillas was disappointed to see Courtois miss out on a place in the top three.

Sadio Mane was second and Kevin De Bruyne third. Robert Lewandowski, Mohamed Salah and Kylian Mbappe also won more votes than Courtois.

Casillas tweeted: "I'm very happy for Thibaut Courtois! With a huge difference, the best goalkeeper in the world. What I'm not happy about is that he was not included in the final podium for the Ballon d'Or.

"I still don't understand what those who choose this award are based on."

A goalkeeper has not won the Ballon d'Or since 1963 when Dynamo Moscow and Soviet Union star Lev Yashin claimed first prize.
