Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the arrival of former Chelsea forward Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig until the end of the season.

Spurs said in a club statement published on Tuesday that the loan agreement includes an "option to make the deal permanent in the summer".

According to The Athletic last week, Tottenham will be able to sign Werner, 27, for a fee "in the region of €15-20 million" if he impresses Ange Postecoglou between now and the end of his loan stay.

Spurs have reportedly not paid Leipzig a loan fee for Werner but will cover his wages in full for the duration of the loan.

Werner's debut for his new club is likely to come at Old Trafford in a Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday.

That would be the 57th appearance of his EPL career - after he delivered 10 goals and nine assists in 56 league games for Chelsea between 2020 and 2022.

Werner wore the no.11 squad number during his two seasons at Stamford Bridge - the same number that he has worn throughout his time at Leipzig.

But no.11 is currently occupied by Bryan Gil at Spurs, so Werner "will wear the number 16 shirt", as confirmed by Tuesday's club statement.

Tottenham's no.16 jersey had been vacant since the end of last season when Arnaut Danjuma left the club.

It was previously worn by the likes of Gareth Bale, Kyle Walker, Micky Hazard and Kieran Trippier.
