Tottenham Hotspur exited the Champions League in the round of 16 after a tame goalless draw with AC Milan in London on Wednesday.

Spurs had lost the first leg 1-0 in Italy three weeks earlier and showed little sign that they were capable of mounting a comeback.

Fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium booed their team off at half-time and again once this miserable match was finally over.

Spurs ended the game with 10 men after Cristian Romero had been dismissed in the 78th minute for collecting his second yellow card.

But Tottenham's latest European failure cannot be blamed on Romero's recklessness.

Antonio Conte's team were painfully slow getting the ball forward and did nothing to energize their 60,000-strong crowd.

They were playing a Milan team that had lost nine times in all competitions this season but gave their defense an easy ride for three hours over two legs.

Tottenham's biggest chance arrived deep into stoppage time on Wednesday when a Harry Kane header was well saved by Mike Maignan.

A counter-attack then resulted in Divock Origi hitting the Spurs post at the other end moments later.

But that 60-second burst of action was not representative of what was otherwise a frustrating and pretty tedious spectacle.
