Tottenham Hotspur fans who paid £30 for a ticket to watch their team lose 6-1 at Newcastle United on Sunday have each been offered a full refund by the players.

Spurs took 3,000 supporters to St James' Park but many left before full-time after watching Newcastle storm into a 5-0 lead inside 21 minutes.

Cristian Stellini paid for the result with his job as the Italian was removed as interim manager 24 hours later.

Tottenham's players have now offered to pay a total of £90,000 in compensation to reimburse every fan who went to Sunday's game.

A group statement published on the club's official website on Tuesday read: "As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger. Sunday wasn't good enough. We know words aren't enough in situations like this but believe us, a defeat like this hurts.

"We appreciate your support, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match tickets from St James' Park.

"We know this does not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right, starting against Manchester United on Thursday evening when, again, your support will mean everything to us. Together – and only together – can we move things forward."

Refunds will be processed automatically by the Tottenham ticket office.
