Turkish club Yeni Malatyaspor announced the death of goalkeeper Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan on Tuesday.

Two earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.5 on the official magnitude scale had hit southern Turkey in the early hours of Monday morning.

Turkaslan died after his residential building collapsed.

"Our goalkeeper, Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan, lost his life after being under the collapse of the earthquake. Rest in peace," read a statement published on Yeni Malatyaspor's official Twitter account.

"We will not forget you, beautiful person."

At the time of Tuesday's statement, more than 5,000 people in Turkey and neighboring Syria had been confirmed dead as a consequence of the earthquakes.
