Liverpool Appoint Virgil Van Dijk And Trent Alexander-Arnold As New Captain And Vice-Captain
Virgil van Dijk has officially been confirmed as the new Liverpool club captain.
Jordan Henderson had held the role since 2015 but he recently left Anfield to join Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia.
James Milner was Liverpool's vice-captain last season but he also left the club this summer. Milner joined Brighton on a free transfer in June.
Van Dijk, 32, was already the captain of the Netherlands men's national team.
Liverpool published a club statement on Monday to announce Van Dijk's promotion.
The statement also revealed that 24-year-old Trent Alexander-Arnold had replaced Milner as vice-captain.
Van Dijk was quoted within the statement as saying:"[It's] a really proud day for me, for my wife, for my kids, my family. It's been a special feeling and I can't really describe it at this point. But it's something that I'm really, really proud of.
“Obviously I'm captain of Holland, that was already such a huge honor, a proud moment as well. But also to be the captain of Liverpool Football Club is something that I can't describe at this point.
"It's just something that makes me very proud and I will do everything in my power and what I can do to make everyone proud and happy with me and the football club."
Alexander-Arnold discovered that he had been chosen as vice-captain during a chat with manager Jurgen Klopp at a training session in Singapore.
Footage of that conversation taking place was shared by Liverpool on Twitter.
