Wayne Rooney Congratulates "England Legend" Harry Kane On Breaking His Record
Wayne Rooney paid tribute to Harry Kane after watching his former teammate replace him as England's all-time top goalscorer.
Kane converted a penalty kick in England's 2-1 win over Italy to score the 54th goal of his international career.
The Tottenham star, whose 54 international goals have come in 81 games, had been on the pitch at Wembley in 2015 when Rooney broke the record, previously held by Bobby Charlton.
Reacting to Kane breaking the record, Rooney tweeted on Thursday: "Congratulations to @HKane on becoming @England's all-time leading goalscorer.
"I knew it wouldn't take long but that was quick.
"Great man, unbelievable goalscorer and an England legend. Congrats Harry".
Kane was informed about Rooney's message during a post-match interview with Channel 4.
He reacted by saying: "Big thanks. I was on the pitch when Wayne broke the record. I know what it meant to him and I was so proud of him.
"I remember when I gave him the boot for breaking the record, he said he would be giving it back to me one day. A special man."
