Tottenham Hotspur lost 6-1 at Newcastle United on Sunday. It was not Tottenham's biggest ever loss. It was not even Tottenham's biggest loss against Newcastle.

Newcastle United recorded their biggest Premier League win since 2011 by smashing Tottenham Hotspur 6-1 on Sunday.

Spurs started the game in a 4-3-3 formation for the first time this season but interim manager Cristian Stellini reverted back to the familiar 3-4-3 system midway through the first half after Newcastle had scored five goals in the first 21 minutes.

Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak each scored two early goals, while Joelinton also found the net during the first-half blitz.

With Spurs five goals down and with more than 75% of the game remaining, a record-breaking defeat appeared to be on the cards.

But Newcastle showed mercy, allowing Spurs to stem the flow of goals.

Harry Kane pulled a goal back for Spurs in the 48th minute, before Callum Wilson completed the scoring midway through a much calmer second half.

What Is Tottenham's Biggest Ever Loss?

Newcastle were unable to inflict a record-breaking defeat on Spurs on Sunday. But the Magpies already held the Premier League record for the biggest margin of victory over Tottenham.

Spurs lost 7-1 at Newcastle in December 1996. The only other teams to beat Spurs by a six-goal margin in the EPL are Sheffield United (6-0 in 1993) and Manchester City (6-0 in 2013).

Tottenham's biggest ever defeat in a domestic match came in 1978 when they lost 7-0 at Liverpool in the old Division 1.

But that is not Tottenham's heaviest defeat of all time. That record was set in July 1995 when a Spurs team made up of youth players, reserves and players signed from lower league teams on short-term loans lost 8-0 to German side Koln in the now-defunct UEFA Intertoto Cup.

Spurs had not wanted to play in the Intertoto Cup but UEFA blocked their request to withdraw.
