Rob McElhenney hailed Paul Mullin as one of the greatest players in world soccer after watching him fire Wrexham AFC to glory in England's National League.

Mullin scored two spectacular goals on Saturday - his 46th and 47th of a remarkable season - as Wrexham came from 1-0 down to beat Boreham Wood 3-1 and win the fifth tier of English soccer.

McElhenney and fellow Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds bought Wrexham in February 2021 and then signed Mullin later that year.

The North American duo were on the pitch celebrating with their team after Saturday's victory when BT Sport's Jeff Brazier grabbed them for a quick interview.

Reynolds was first to make a statement. He said: "One thing that's running through my head over and over again is people said 'why Wrexham? Why Wrexham?'

"This is exactly why Wrexham. What is happening right now is why!"

McElhenney added: "I think we can hear how it feels to the town and that's what's most important to us. I think this is a moment of catharsis for them and celebration.

"For us to be welcomed into their community and to be welcomed into this experience has been the honor of my life."

Reynolds then went on to praise Boreham Wood, as well as title rivals Notts County, whose points tally of 106 would have been enough to be crowned as champions in any previous campaign at this level.

Notts County must now win a four-team playoff if they are to get promoted alongside Wrexham this season.

Reynolds said: "We are rooting for Notts County, we want to see them go up to League Two and we want to face them next season. They're incredible."

Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard had earlier said in his post-match interview that his team had been "Mullined", in reference to a brilliant display by Wrexham Player of the Year Mullin.

When told what Garrard had said about Mullin, McElhenney replied with a straight face. "I'd like to say that Paul Mullin is one of the greatest football players in the world."

Reynolds then quipped: "I wouldn't mind getting Mullined."

Who Is Paul Mullin?

Paul Philip Mullin is a 28-year-old striker who played for Everton, Liverpool and Huddersfield Town as a junior player.

At senior level, he scored goals for Morecambe, Swindon Town, Tranmere Rovers and Cambridge United before signing for Wrexham in July 2021.

Mullin has scored 79 goals in his first 96 matches for Wrexham.

Wrexham signed Mullin from Cambridge after he had won the Golden Boot in League Two during the 2020/21 season with 32 goals in 46 games.

Mullin recently revealed that he will release a book later this year, titled: 'My Wrexham Story'.
