A man has died after being injured while working on the construction site of Everton's new stadium.

The worker, who was later named as 26-year-old Michael Jones, was taken to Aintree Hospital at around 1pm on Monday.

It was later confirmed that he had passed away despite the best efforts of medics.

Jones, from Kirkby in Merseyside, was a lifelong Everton fan who had been "so happy to be working on the new stadium", according to a statement released by his family on Tuesday.

It read: "The family would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support.

"It is with our greatest sadness that our beloved son, brother uncle and friend Michael has sadly passed away."

The family statement added: "We want to thank the NHS staff and work colleagues who did their best for Michael. He will be missed beyond words."

A club statement published on Monday had earlier read: "Everyone at Everton Football Club is heartbroken by the news a male worker has died following an incident at the Everton Stadium site at Bramley Moore Dock.

"The thoughts and condolences of everyone connected with Everton are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this unimaginably sad time.

"Stadium Contractor Laing O'Rourke will cooperate with Merseyside Police and the Health and Safety Executive in their investigations."

Construction work on the site has been suspended until further notice.
