Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic will soon become Manchester City's first signing of the summer.

The 29-year-old Croatia international moved to Stamford Bridge from Real Madrid in 2019 for a transfer fee in the region of £40 million.

But Chelsea are now expected to accept a financial loss by selling him to the Premier League champions for a deal worth up to £30m.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, City are set to sign Kovacic for an initial fee of £25m, with a possible £5m extra in add-ons.

Those add-ons are all said to be performance-related payments based on team success, rather than how many appearances Kovacic makes.

Kovacic has played 142 Premier League games for Chelsea, scoring four goals and assisting 13.

He helped the Blues win the UEFA Champions League in the 2020/21 season when he featured in 10 of the team's 13 European matches.

Kovacic is a four-time Champions League winner, having also lifted the trophy in 2016, 2017 and 2018 with Real.

His arrival at the Etihad Stadium is likely to coincide with Ilkay Gundogan leaving the club.

Gundogan, 32, has less than two weeks left to run on his current City contract and is being tipped to depart on a free transfer this summer.
