Manchester United have agreed a deal worth £72 million to sign striker Rasmus Hojlund from Italian club Atalanta.

The 20-year-old is set to move to Old Trafford for an initial transfer fee of £64m, plus a possible further £8m in performance-related add-ons.

Denmark international Hojlund will sign a five-year contract with United that will include the option to extend it by an extra year until June 2029.

Hojlund will be United's third major signing of the summer - following the arrivals of Mason Mount for £60m and Andre Onana for £47.2m from Chelsea and Inter Milan respectively.

The Red Devils have therefore committed to spend - including add-ons - £179.2m on new players since the end of last season.

Hojlund scored 10 goals in 34 games for Atalanta during the 2022/23 campaign.

He has netted six goals in six senior international appearances for Denmark, including a hat-trick during a 3-1 win over Finland in March.

Recruiting a new striker had been a top priority for United boss Erik ten Hag.

Harry Kane was on Ten Hag's wanted list before the club decided that a deal for the Tottenham star would be too expensive.

United had been keen to pay around £60m for Hojlund but Atalanta held firm during protracted transfer talks.

Hojlund joined Atalanta in August 2022 when he was bought for around €17m (£13.75m) from Sturm Graz in Austria.

Sturm Graz had signed Hojlund from Copenhagen for just €1.8m (£1.55m) seven months earlier.
