Al-Ahli look set to start the 2023/24 Saudi Pro League season with two UEFA Champions League winners in their team.

The Jeddah side, who won promotion last season as Saudi First Division League champions, have already signed former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Senegal international Mendy, who won The Best FIFA Goalkeeper award in 2021 after inspiring Chelsea to UCL glory that year, signed a three-year contract with Al-Ahli earlier this week.

Mendy now looks set to be joined by former Liverpool star Roberto Firmino, 31.

Brazil striker Firmino is available on a free transfer after ending his eight-year spell at Anfield this summer.

Firmino scored 111 goals in 362 appearances for the Reds and won seven trophies, including the 2019 Champions League.

Trusted transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano tweeted on Thursday: "Understand Roberto Firmino has now reached full verbal agreement with Al Ahli, here we go!"

He added: "Medical tests still pending — final step to get the deal signed. Contract will be valid until June 2026."

Firmino will be the latest big-name striker to move to the Saudi Pro League this year, following in the footsteps of Al Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo and Al-Ittihad summer signing Karim Benzema.

The 2023/24 Pro League season is due to begin on August 20. The league will now feature 18 teams - two more than last season.
