Andre Onana Error Costs Manchester United Goal Against Bayern Munich
A handling error by Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana resulted in Bayern Munich striking first in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League Group A opener.
United had made a bright start in Bavaria before Bayern netted against the run of play in the 28th minute.
Leroy Sane played a one-two with Harry Kane before shooting from 20 yards.
Sane's hopeful shot was hit cleanly but it definitely should have been saved by Onana.
However, the former Inter Milan and Ajax stopper allowed the ball to burst through his hands.
That goal burst United's bubble and it was 2-0 to Bayern five minutes later.
Serge Gnabry got Bayern's second goal of the game following a fine assist from Jamal Musiala.
United threatened to launch a comeback when Rasmus Hojlund scored his first goal since signing from Atalanta.
Hojlund's goal came courtesy of a clinical two-touch finish 199 seconds into the second half.
But Bayern restored their two-goal lead less than five minutes later when Harry Kane converted a penalty kick awarded for a Christian Eriksen handball.
It was 3-2 in the 88th minute thanks to an improvised finish from Casemiro, who poked a low shot past Sven Ulreich while laying on his back inside the penalty area.
Mathys Tel then scored Bayern's fourth moments after coming on as a late substitute.
Casemiro found the net again deep into added time when he headed home from close range following a wicked Bruno Fernandes free-kick.
But that proved to be the final action of the game as Bayern ran out as 4-3 winners.
Former United defender Rio Ferdinand said after the game that Onana's error epitomized United's season so far.
"All the blame [for that goal] lays at his door," Ferdinand said on TNT Sports. "It was a straightforward save. It's not a hard shot to deal with. He'd expect to make that save.
"It epitomizes Manchester United this season. Most of the goals they've conceded this season, they could have made tougher for the opposition. He hasn't dealt with a big moment there."
