Watch Ian Maatsen And Christopher Nkunku Score First Chelsea Goals In Big Win Over Wrexham
Ian Maatsen and Christopher Nkunku scored their first goals for Chelsea as the Mauricio Pochettino era began with a 5-0 win over Wrexham in North Carolina.
Maatsen was one of a number of unfamiliar faces included in new manager Pochettino's starting XI at the Kenan Memorial Stadium.
The 21-year-old, who had only previously played once for the Blues since joining from PSV Eindhoven in 2018, is a left-back by trade.
But Pochettino started him as an attacking winger in Wednesday's pre-season friendly.
Maatsen rewarded Pochettino's faith by scoring twice in the first half, before being subbed off for Raheem Sterling at the interval.
Nkunku, Conor Gallagher and Ben Chilwell also entered the game ahead of the second half.
All three went on to join Maatsen on the scoresheet.
Nkunku, who was making his Chelsea debut following a £52 million move from RB Leipzig in June, netted the fourth goal of the game after dribbling around Wrexham keeper Robert Lainton following a through pass from Cesare Casadei.
Highlights: Chelsea 5-0 Wrexham
Italian midfielder Casadei and English center-back Bashir Humphreys were the only two players who were on the field for the entire game.
The score perhaps flattered Chelsea slightly. Both teams registered 11 shots but the EPL side finished much more clinically than their League Two opponents.
Next up for Chelsea is a clash with Brighton in the Premier League Summer Series on Saturday night. That game will take place at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
