Cody Gakpo could have been playing for Manchester United had the club been more ruthless in the mid-season transfer window.

But instead, Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January following months of flirting from the Old Trafford club.

Gakpo rubbed salt into United wounds on Sunday by scoring two goals against them in a record-breaking 7-0 thrashing at Anfield.

The 23-year-old fired Liverpool 1-0 up in the 43rd minute after latching onto a fine pass from Andy Robertson.

Gakpo netted again in the 49th minute to make it 3-0 after Darwin Nunez had scored Liverpool's second.

The Dutchman's second goal came courtesy of a chipped finish past David de Gea from a narrow angle.

Sunday's goals were Gakpo's third and fourth for the Reds.

He had previously netted in 2-0 wins over Everton and Newcastle.

But it was not only with his goals that Gakpo impressed on Sunday.

He won more aerial battles - three - than any of his teammates and also earned his side three free-kicks.
