Aston Villa defender Diego Carlos was lucky not to receive a red card during Saturday's 1-0 win over Arsenal after appearing to elbow Eddie Nketiah.

The off-the-ball incident occurred late in the second half when both players were positioned near the halfway line.

As Nketiah attempted to run in behind Carlos, the Brazilian swung his left arm into the face of the Arsenal striker, who fell to the ground.

Referee Jarred Gillett gave Arsenal a free-kick and showed Carlos a yellow card, which appeared to be a rather lenient punishment.

But, surprisingly, the VAR did not advise Gillett to review the incident for a possible case of violent conduct.

Even more surprisingly, prior to Saturday Carlos had never been shown a card of any color during his Premier League career.

However, many fans feel that he was also fortunate not to be sent off for striking the back of Bryan Gil's head with his right elbow during Villa's 2-1 win at Tottenham last month.
