France recorded its biggest win in men's international soccer by thrashing Gibraltar 14-0 in a Euro 2024 qualifier.

Prior to Saturday, France's biggest margin of victory had been 10-0 - recorded against Azerbaijan in 1995.

Meanwhile, Gibraltar's heaviest defeat had been 9-0 - away to Belgium in 2017.

But both of those records were smashed at Nice's Allianz Riviera where Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick and also provided three assists.

Mbappe's third goal of the night was a spectacular strike from long range.

Eleven of France's 14 goals came after Gibraltar had been reduced to 10 men.

It took France just 155 seconds to take the lead on Saturday when a low cross from Jonathan Clauss resulted in an Ethan Santos own goal.

France's second goal, which arrived in the fourth minute, was also recorded as an own goal initially after Gibraltar defender Aymen Mouelhi deflected the ball into the net. But upon review, UEFA later awarded the goal to Marcus Thuram, who had also touched the ball.

Warren Zaire-Emery made it 3-0 in the 16th minute but was injured in the process of scoring by a dangerous challenge from Santos, who was eventually sent off following a VAR check.

Mbappe then converted a penalty on the half-hour mark before teeing up Clauss to score with a powerful strike from 28 yards.

Kingsley Coman smashed home from close range to score France's sixth goal, before Youssouf Fofana got no.7 with a low drive from just outside the penalty area.

Gibraltar's 10 men held out for the first 18 minutes of the second half before the floodgates reopened as Adrien Rabiot, Coman, Ousmane Dembele and Mbappe all found the net in a nine-minute burst.

Olivier Giroud thought he had made it 12-0 in the 78th minute but his goal was disallowed for offside.

However, it was 12-0 just four minutes later when Mbappe completed the 17th hat-trick of his senior career by nailing a stunning lob from almost 40 yards.

Giroud then scored two late goals - including one from an acrobatic bicycle kick - to complete the rout.
