Linda Caicedo Scores Goal Of The Tournament Contender As Colombia Stun Germany To Progress At Women's World Cup
Manuela Vanegas scored a 97th-minute winner for Colombia as Germany lost a FIFA Women's World Cup group game for the first time since 1995.
Germany started Sunday's match as strong favorites after beating Morocco 6-0 in their Group H opener six days earlier.
But Colombia took the lead early in the second half when 18-year-old Linda Caicedo scored a Goal of the Tournament contender.
Real Madrid starlet Caicedo danced between Svenja Huth and Sara Dabritz inside the Germany penalty area before curling a stunning strike into the top corner.
Caicedo - who underwent six months of chemotherapy in 2020 after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer - had also found the net in Colombia's 2-0 win over South Korea earlier in the tournament.
Germany thought they had earned a point on Sunday when Alexandra Popp converted a penalty kick in the 89th minute.
But Colombia hit back deep into added time when Manuela Vanegas rose superbly to head home the winning goal from a corner.
Highlights: Germany 1-2 Colombia
Colombia have now qualified for the round of 16 with a game to spare.
The South American side will take on Morocco in their final group game on Thursday, while Germany will face South Korea.
Morocco beat South Korea 1-0 earlier on Sunday.
South Korea will have to beat Germany by at least five goals on Thursday to stand any chance of progressing from Group H.
Two-time champions Germany will go through as long as they beat South Korea - unless Morocco win by a margin of 11 goals against Colombia.
But Germany will be eliminated if they draw and Morocco win, or if Germany lose and Morocco draw.
