Germany Beat France In Penalty Shootout To Win FIFA U17 World Cup
Germany won the 2023 FIFA U17 World Cup on Saturday after beating France in a dramatic final.
France came from 2-0 down to force a penalty shootout but Germany prevailed on spot-kicks to win the tournament for the first time.
Borussia Dortmund forward Paris Brunner gave Germany the lead on 29 minutes by converting a penalty after a VAR review had found Aymen Sadi guilty of fouling Bilal Yalcinkaya.
Barcelona midfielder Noah Darvich then doubled Germany's advantage with a smart finish from a tight angle early in the second half.
Saint-Etienne's Saimon Bouabre got France back into the contest with a fine solo goal in the 53rd minute.
Germany went down to 10 men a quarter of an hour later when RB Leipzig midfielder Winners Osawe picked up his second yellow card.
The 10 men held on until the 85th minute when Tidiam Gomis tapped in an equalizer after excellent work by Mathis Amougou.
Rather than playing extra time, the final went straight to penalties and Germany failed to convert their first kick as Eric Da Silva Moreira was denied by France keeper Paul Argney.
Le Harve stopper Paul Argney also saved from Brunner but Germany eventually won the shootout 4-3 after Nhoa Sangui, Bastien Meupiyou and Gomis all failed to beat Germany keeper Konstantin Heide.
This was Germany's second penalty shootout victory of the tournament, coming four days after spot-kicks saw them overcome Argentina in the semi-finals.
Germany had beaten Mexico, New Zealand, Venezuela, USA and Spain earlier in the tournament.
