A penalty kick awarded by a VAR review eventually resulted in Chelsea scoring more than one goal in a game for the first time this year.

Tuesday's UEFA Champions League last 16 second leg against Borussia Dortmund was Chelsea's 13th game of 2023.

The Blues had only scored four times in their previous 12 matches.

Raheem Sterling netted Chelsea's fifth goal of 2023 to put his side 1-0 ahead in the first half of Tuesday's match.

Kai Havertz then made it 2-0 to Chelsea (2-1 on aggregate) in the 53rd minute when he converted a spot-kick at the second attempt.

The penalty was given after a VAR review found that Dortmund right-back Marius Wolf had handled a Ben Chilwell cross.

Havertz hit the post with his initial effort but another VAR review spared his blushes.

It found the Dortmund defense guilty of encroachment, so Havertz was given a second life.

The 23-year-old held his nerve by sending the keeper the wrong way and slotting the ball low into the net.

Chelsea won the game 2-0 to progress to the quarter-finals courtesy of a 2-1 victory on aggregate.
