Karim Benzema Scores 20th Champions League Goal Against English Opposition

Karim Benzema scored against Chelsea for the sixth time in five games as Real Madrid struck first in their latest Champions League clash.

The Frenchman was left with a simple tap-in in the 22nd minute of Wednesday's quarter-final first leg in Spain after Kepa Arrizabalaga had spilled an effort from Vinicius Junior.

Wednesday's game was the eighth official meeting between Real and Chelsea. Benzema has scored more goals in this fixture than any other player.

He netted four times against the Blues in last season's Champions League when Real prevailed 6-5 on aggregate in an epic quarter-final.

Benzema was also on target when Real lost to Chelsea in the semi-finals in 2021.

In total, Benzema has now scored 20 goals against English clubs in the Champions League. Only Lionel Messi has scored more (27).

Benzema's goal on Wednesday set Real on their way to a 2-0 victory.

Marco Asensio got Real's second goal in the 74th minute, a quarter of an hour after Ben Chilwell had been sent off for a last-man foul on Rodrygo.

The second leg will take place at Stamford Bridge next Tuesday.
